What on earth is that?
We’ve heard about vacations and staycations, but a late-cation?
Many people don’t enjoy the crazy rush of the popular holiday destinations at the popular times, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t want to go there! And many jobs don’t have rigid leave times anymore, making lives a little more flexible…
If your children aren’t in school yet, they’re old enough to look after themselves or you don’t have any, you also don’t have to arrange your holidays around school terms.
Voila! A late-cation is just the thing! An out-of-season holiday has many benefits, and so does going somewhere off the beaten track.
SAVING TIME
Whether you pick a popular or less-visited place for you break, you will be saving time either way.
The Hot Spots:
Going to the hot spots in high season always means lots of traffic – even if you are flying! Getting to and from the airport can take longer than your flight… And once you get to your destination, finding parking at the beach can take half a day and spotting game from what resembles a parking lot certainly isn’t fun. Not to mention the queues everywhere!
Off season is a lot calmer. You might even get an empty seat next to you on the plane!
The Odd Spots:
Even some of the hidden gems can get somewhat busy in season. But, generally, ‘the road less travelled’ means exactly that!
SAVING MONEY
Most hotels and other accommodation suppliers have great deals and discounts in the off season.
The Hot Spots:
This is your chance to get into those ‘boujee’ places that mainly cater to the tourist market! Keep an eye out for package deals and special offers in the quieter months and remember, the longer you stay, the better the deal! Midweek breaks are also much more cost-effective than weekends.
The Odd Spots:
Don’t be fooled into thinking that the lesser-known destinations don’t offer quality accommodation and entertainment. Quite the opposite in many cases! Star-for-star, you will get better value for money every time!
GETTING BETTER SERVICE
When people – hotel management, service staff, tour guides – are run off their feet, they have less of an opportunity to cater to the individual needs of their guests.
The Hot Spots:
In the off season, staff at the busy destinations don’t only have more time, but are a lot more patient! Possibly because they are dealing with fewer impatient people… More time and patience mean better and more personal service.
The Odd Spots:
Often these spots are run by people who love what they do and care more about providing visitors with memorable experiences. They are also keen to spread the word about their passion projects, so they will spend more time and care on making your stay pleasant!
HAVING MORE SPACE
Of course, it can be fun to be part of a crowd, but overcrowding is frustrating! Waiting in line for the bathroom, trying to find space for your umbrella or missing the breakfast service by a minute doesn’t make for a great vacation!
The Hot Spots:
You get to enjoy everything that makes the popular destinations so well-loved, without
being surrounded by too many people. You won’t have to book everything in advance
(although that’s always a good idea), but you’ll be able to be more spontaneous and go with the flow!
The Odd Spots:
Taking the short left will take you to places with wider open spaces! You’ll be able to explore more, try different things and linger a litter longer if you feel like it. As mentioned above, with fewer people around, wildlife is easier to spot and less disturbed by too many vehicles.
MORE POINTS TO PONDER
If you need any more persuasion, here you go:
Off-season holidays and off-beat places give you the opportunity to try new things. Going to the same place regularly has a pleasant familiarity to it, but there is much to be explored in our beautiful country!
When you can take a more leisurely vacation, you will be able to relax a lot more and really focus on ‘switching off’ and recharging. You will have more time to create memorable experiences.
If you care about the planet, off season breaks also reduce your environmental impact with less fuel use and carbon emissions.
So, if you can, there are many great reasons to take a late-cation!
Whenever you take leave, do your research. Make sure you know as much as possible about a place – especially in an area you don’t know. Read the reviews and follow the travel advisories.
Safe travels!
